What a Keyframe Actually Does

A keyframe records the value of a property at a specific moment. Place one keyframe with an object on the left, move later in the timeline, then place the object on the right. The editor calculates the intermediate frames. This calculation is interpolation; the speed pattern between those points is controlled by easing.

Position, scale, rotation, opacity, effect parameters, cameras, and many other settings can be animated. The strongest results come from choosing only the properties needed for the shot instead of keyframing everything.

Create Your First Position Animation

Create a short project

Use a five-second project and add one shape or text layer. A short timeline makes the movement easier to read.

Choose Move & Transform

Select the layer and open the control that contains position, scale, and rotation.

Set the starting state

Place the playhead at the start, position the layer off-screen or at its first location, and add the first keyframe.

Set the ending state

Move the playhead about one second forward, change the position, and let the app record the second value.

Preview and adjust

Play the result. Move the second keyframe left for faster motion or right for slower motion.

Why Easing Makes Motion Feel Natural

Linear movement travels at one constant speed. That is useful for mechanical motion, progress indicators, and continuous pans, but it often feels abrupt for titles or objects entering a scene. Ease-out starts faster and settles into the destination; ease-in starts gently and accelerates away; ease-in-out softens both ends.

Think in terms of intent. A heavy object should take longer to accelerate and stop. A notification can arrive quickly and settle with a small overshoot. A camera move is normally smoother with restrained curves than with dramatic bouncing.

Five Practical Keyframe Techniques

Text entrance

Combine a small position shift, opacity fade, and gentle scale change. Offset multiple lines by a few frames.

Smooth zoom

Animate scale and position together so the subject remains framed. Use a restrained ease-in-out curve.

Parallax scene

Move foreground layers farther than background layers to simulate depth. Keep direction consistent.

Camera reveal

Animate a camera object rather than many individual layers when the whole composition should move together.

Opacity transition

Overlap two clips and animate opacity in opposite directions for a controlled crossfade.

Beat emphasis

Place a scale or rotation accent around an audio beat, then return quickly to the base state.

Common Keyframe Mistakes

  • Placing keyframes too close together and creating a sudden jump.
  • Using a dramatic curve on every movement, which makes the composition feel inconsistent.
  • Animating from the wrong playhead position and accidentally adding an unwanted keyframe.
  • Changing position and scale without checking whether the subject remains inside the frame.
  • Copying a preset built for another duration or frame rate without retiming it.
  • Adding motion blur before the timing is correct, which can hide rather than fix poor movement.

A 15-Minute Practice Exercise

Create three text layers and animate each from below the frame. Use ease-out, offset each layer by four frames, and make the final line slightly slower. Add one camera move across the entire group. Export a low-resolution preview, watch it without audio, and adjust any movement that calls attention to itself for the wrong reason.

Then duplicate the project and replace the text with a logo or shape. This reveals which settings are reusable and which were dependent on the original dimensions.
